The beginner’s guide to pigeons fancing: where to buy your first marathon pigeon, how much does it cost and what to pay attention to

3 February 2020

Pigeon fancing is a passion, by definition, and at the same time it is the science of breeding pigeons. There are two types of pigeon growers: those who inherited, from the family, the science of pigeon breeding, and because they attracted by this science, learned and deal with pigeons, and the second category are those who discovered pigeons in their environment, socially or from different backgrounds, began to study and then to invest in pigeons.

In other words, you cannot become a pigeon fancier overnight, if you have decided that you are attracted to the field. The art of pigeon fancing is perfected over time, as you gather information and experience.

In this article we will not refer to the first technical information you need, how a bird should be, how to separate the pigeons by sex, or about the number of pigeons that fit in a given space, or how you build it, but we will provide important information on how and where to buy your first marathon pigeon, how much it should cost and what to pay attention to. Because, after you have read all you could about the pigeons and mastered the theory, the practice is quite different and the danger of not starting good is very likely.

We asked for the advice of some pigeon fanciers dedicated to the marathon category and from that advice we made a list of some extremely important steps to consider when preparing for your first purchase of pigeons.

Here is a list of important issues to consider if you are a beginner in the field of pigeon growing:

1. Decide very well, from the beginning, what you want to do with the pigeons.
2. Don’t buy 100 pigeons, buy a few each year, and make sure you offer them all your attention.
3. Scout your surounding area in order to buy pigeons from the best breeders in your area.
4. Pay close attention to the breeder, to the character of the person you buy from.
5. It is advisable to have a mentor, a dedicated pigeon fancier who wants to help you in your first steps of pigeon breeding.
6. Look directly for the pigeons with results, champions, or chicks that come from parents champions. As well, you can also target the families of champions, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; surely the prices will be lower, and you will have good pigeons.
7. Buy young pigeons in the spring or fall, when their price is lower.
8. Take care of the pigeons you buy, even if they are genetically very good, in order for them to bring you good results. It is important for the birds to be treated very carefully, from the hygiene, treatments and to the correct training, so that they can perform.
9. Be very careful also about the area where you are and you want to fly your birds, so that they are not disadvantaged. If there are forests in your area, there are most likely birds of prey.
10. Seek to inform yourself correctly, and do not be demotivated if you see conflicting opinions. Many times, everyone is right in their case, so there is no single recipe for success.

Here are the tips, from experienced pigeon growers:

Ioan Feștilă: “It is very difficult at the moment. There’s a lot of information, and believe me there’s a lot of misinformation too. And everyone wants their pigeons to be famous. They should, very simply, look for a mentor, just as I found mine in Ștefan Butucanu.

I started with him, we are now friends, we visit each other. For example, I do not use the consanguinity method, but when it is necessary to do something, I do not do it myself, even after so many years, I ask him. Because he knows many things about pigeons. So, the young people, should first find a person, with which they can collaborate with, to choose their pigeons according to some criteria. It’s quite difficult and very complicated now.

First of all, you need an honest pigeon seller. Now you can go somewhere where you can find only the stories, nothing tangible. Somehow you have to find the right man in the right place. And everyone has his own luck. When I buy a pigeon, I buy it according to my criteria. My choice can’t be the same as someone else’s. Everyone, has their system, but I’m a great expert at this. I do not bring many pigeons to my farm. What I did this year, I put in the mat 3 brothers, the father and the mother, the female champions, are in another mat. I put them back and 3 young birds came out.

As I told you, in order to grow, you must first find an honest mentor. There are many good breeders in Romania, with pigeons at pretty good prices. I give you an example from my experience – from one male, 1987, with Palmares As Maraton 3 years and from a female who has Palmares As Maraton, we are talking about 2 pigeons, for me the correct price is 250 euros. Where I am from, 100 euros is the correct price. But if a beginner comes to me, with 300 lei, with 250 lei, without problems I sell them pigeons of high quality. But they don’t believe in these things.

Now the trend is that the expensive pigeon is the valuable one. Not true. Wrong. I am very honest with pigeon growers. I have very good results in tandem with my son, we are Ioan and Cătălin Feștilă. We have the 3rd place several times, the 2nd and 3rd place in As Fond, the 2nd place in the National Ace, the 4th place in the Marathon Breeders, 21 titles in the province.

I was constantly overwhelmed by the prices at which the products are sold in Romania. All products are very expensive. That is why we have also chosen to sell products from Travipharma, first and foremost because they are very good products, it is a much looser and much lighter program than the programs of others. We sell a food that the breeder can buy at 1.8 lei / kg, and can reach max 3 lei / kg. I also made the minerals in the bucket, at a price of 50 lei, when you buy 10 buckets you can get one for free, and you get to 45 lei per bucket.

For this reason many pigeon growers have a slow start, especially the young ones, because the prices are very high. I went to the Olympics last year, and I saw the same minerals made, with 55 lei. And then it caught my attention and I realized that in Romania, only expensive products are sold, and it’s not fair. That is also the reason that led me to sell the products I told you about, very good and at a fair price. ”

George Vochin: “There are a lot of people in Romania who spend a lot of money for their pigeons, people who gave thousands of euros. If you want to buy from Romania, you have to look for a serious pigeon grower, and choose from the best pigeons. My first pigeon, when I started, in 2007, was 2nd National and his father 1st National. I had a good start. By starting with a very good breeder and a very good flyer is harder to be disappointed. If you don’t start well, you have to give up. Some give up, they no longer have the courage to move on. It’s kind of back and forth. Regarding the price, it depends on where you take it.

There are people who sell very expensive and people who sell very cheap. For example, if a newcomer comes to me, I tell him a price a little lower than I normally sell at. There are people who do not do this, they ask for the same money, regardless to whom. If I see him a beginner and he wants to try, I help him. But as I said, it depends on where you go to buy from. There are people who do not spend under 1000 euros for any good pigeon bought. And it also depends on who you learn from, to find someone capable to teach you something useful. Because there are years of constant learning. If you do not stand next to a man who teaches you, you can buy the best pigeons and not be able to handle them. When I first started with pigeons, I was in Holland. At that time, only few people were buying from the Netherlands. And now I go to the Netherlands at least twice a year.

It is difficult for sure. If from 25-30 pigeons, I breed 2-3, I am very satisfied. This is my norm. Anyone who wants to get into pigeon-holing has to think about what he wants to do. One may want fame, another to win a cup in the region, another in the country. In my opinion, pigeon growing is quite complicated. “

Gheorghe Preda: “If you are a beginner, I would recommend that you pay close attention to the farmers in your area: to choose one or two people, with very good results year after year, as models, , and then to move on. Then, be careful of the breeder you choose, do not cheat, and then compare both your results. I think a beginner should be limited to smaller amounts of pigeons, and start from flying them in the spring and fall. For example, I pair the pigeons and in the spring about 23-24 young birds I give away, I give them to friends as gifts.”

Claudiu Roman: “My opinion is that there is no rule. You can build your strategy after someone in your area, or simply from the Internet. Now it’s no longer a problem to inform yourself. But it is quite difficult to make the right choices. We all want the best pigeons. But there is not only one pigeon that is extraordinary, there are a lot of them. If you look at breeders who are top winners, each one has several breeding pigeons on the farm.

Now, regarding the price, for me it’s better to buy 10-20 average pigeons than one extraordinary one. There may be cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. From a family, there are many who give results, and one good pigeon then can give good genes to grandchildren, he can take good genes from a brother, and he has chances to succeed.

Now depends on how good his luck is. And then, it also depends on how the owner looks after it, a pigeon also needs a good meal, and a house, and training, but also luck, all in one place, it’s a whole, they all belong together. Otherwise, you have a good pigeon with no results, if you do not care about it, or your farm is dusty, or the area where you live is disadvantaged. The surrounding area also matters. If you live near a forest, for example, you are in a disadvantaged area. All in all the important thing is to have patience, not to dramatize. After all, it is a sport, sometimes we win, sometimes we lose.

What I do not like and it happens in many areas are the haters. Some are ambitious, others are demoralized. You see on the Internet all kinds of campaigns that are not normal. Plus, while on the internet, you are looking to find the solution to a problem and find answers that are confusing. And it is really hard for those who want to start in this sport, because they do not know what to understand. Now, the chance for a young person to have results is not just one. That’s why I say there are many ways to succeed.

So it’s not necessarily a single solution, you just have to do it in a certain way. I have watched many study cases on the internet, some say that they are doing right in one way, others the other way, and the culmination is that both were successful. That’s why I say there is not one way, so don’t demotivate yourself. Let each person start as he thinks, and then from the experiences he has had, he will decide for himself which way is best for him. And the solutions for each problem are found, if there is ambition a soution will show up. “

Ionel Dobre: “To buy a pigeon from the area where they live, to give themselves a way after which category they choose and to buy a pigeon in the respective category, to pay attention to the character of the man from which they buy. Seriousness is very important in purchasing quality pigeons. Therefore, I recommend you to be careful when choosing the seller, not just the bird to be bought. The price of a successful pigeon starts from 100 euros upwards. Equally important is the way you care for the bird, if you do not pay attention to maintenance and treatments, it can be a good chick that in return will not provide results”.
